As a spiritual lady who seeks inspiration from traditional witchcraft, sometimes I need a break from all of the symbolism, spells, and interpretations. These five acts of connecting with the universe are concrete, no-nonsense, and dead simple things you can do to feel more grounded within yourself and with the world around you.
Breathe.
The benefits of meditation are already well-known, but I like adding this one exercise to the end of my meditation. As you focus on your breath, think about how every living thing on Earth right now is also breathing in and out. You and your breath are part of something ginormous and profound, just by breathing! Feel the connection to your breath, and the breath of all living things.
Touch nature.
Get your bare feet onto some dirt, sand, or grass. Stick your hands in the soil of your garden. Focus on feeling every tiny particle and imagine your touch expanding to every other particle through proximity. You’re connected to every particle on your continent!
In addition to earth, you can do the same exercise with water. If you live near an ocean, lake, or stream, dip your hands or feet into the water. That water flows into or is connected to all of the water on the entire planet! Imagine your hands sending shockwaves through the water to someone else on the other side of the world with their hand in the water at the same time. Be open to feeling connections and shockwaves sent from others.
Perform an act of kindness.
Doing something nice for someone else reminds us of our humanity and capacity to care for others. Even if it’s just smiling at a stranger, acts of kindness unlock our sense of empathy and improve our sense of community and connection.
Sync with your pet.
Go beyond belly rubs and when your pet is in a relaxed state, try gazing into their eyes. What do you see? Is there something deeper behind their eyes? Can you sense anything? You can also gently put a hand on their belly and feel their breath go in and out. Try syncing your breathing with theirs.
Get closer with loved ones.
Reach out to a friend or family member just because. Rather than small talk, as them a deeper question. What’s a memory they have when they felt the most alive? When do they remember you appearing the most alive?
